Using Wikipedia in Research

PDF Print E-mail
Is Wikipedia a credible source and should it be allowed as a cited source in research papers? Wikipedia

A wiki is a software engine that allows for editing and linking of web pages easily and by a lot of people. They are often used to make collaborative websites for an online community. This allows all the users in that community to easily add their own web pages or to edit those that already exist. This creates a much faster way to portray accurate information about a large number of people, products, issues etc. Ward Cunningham, as the first developer of wiki software said that it is the easiest online database possible.

Wikipedia is exactly what it sounds like, a wiki that works as an encyclopedia. It allows for any user anywhere in the world to edit any entry. This is designed to create an up-to-date database for all to use. The question is, is wikipedia good enough to be cited in college papers?

It is a very debatable answer, but many agree that the answer to that is NO.

Don’t get me wrong, wikipedia is a great source for finding information about a subject. In fact it is one of the best places to do so. Unlike any of the other online encyclopedias, wikipedia is updated constantly. A test was done in which a group of experts purposely changed key information to make one of the entries false. Within an alarmingly short time, the correct information had replaced it. This proves that new and accurate information is being added daily and erroneous information is being deleted and replaced. Because of this perpetual updating, wikipedia is a great resource. One is almost guaranteed fast and accurate information. Also the wide variety of subjects on wikipedia makes for easy one-stop-shopping so to speak. Nearly all subjects are covered on wikipedia. One can even find entries for fictional characters and worlds on wikipedia.

Because of its ease of use, college students have begun to use wikipedia as a cited source in many of their papers. Many professors look down on this. This of course makes sense. The purpose of citing a resource is to add credibility to a paper or report. This is the reason writers must be careful which sources to trust, even more so on the internet. Anyone can post any information on the web and not all of it is exactly truthful. Sometimes this is through ignorance or simple lack of interest. Whatever the reason, this translates to wikipedia. While it will most likely be accurate, there is a possibility that it is not. All the information on wikipedia, with a few exceptions, is secondary. When citing a source for a report, one should go to primary sources first. It is much more credible to get the information right from the source than through an intermediary. It is the difference of ‘John Smith found’ to ‘Jane Doe said John Smith found.’

This holds true for every other source to be cited in any paper, so why should it be any different for wikipedia? Wikipedia is an excellent starting place for any research, but should not be cited as the information is fairly basic, ever changing and a secondary source. When doing research on wikipedia, it is best to look at the footnotes of the article, and find links to the direct source that is cited in the wikipedia entry. This will give your research paper more credibility when citing sources.

How to Become an Entrepreneur

PDF Print E-mail
Many people say that starting up your own business is hard. The truth is that starting up any business can be a challenge. If you want to become a successful entrepreneur you need to know how to best approach a situation. Once you know how best to approach the situation you need to know how to carry out your plans and set up your business.

To become an entrepreneur you need to have a good idea. A good idea is an idea which if successful, can push a business forward and enable faster growth and a greater flow of income. When thinking of an idea it is best to look for a gap in the market in which you can fill in your idea. But don’t look for any old gap, you have to think logically and make sure that it is a valid niche. You could even carry out market research and find out what would work. This is the first and most important step to take before starting up your own business and becoming a successful entrepreneur. If you get this step wrong you could end up losing out later on.

In order to get this step right you need to spend lots of time going over your ideas. You can even do a trial run of your idea to see how successful it is. But, the main point is that if you do not get your idea correct, you will have trouble becoming a true entrepreneur, let alone a successful one. You need to take every single aspect into consideration when selecting your idea and once you have found something that you think will work, push it forward to the next step.

Ideas are all what an entrepreneur is about. You need to generate a good idea and expand on it. If you can do this well enough you will be able to create a business. But it is not that simple, you have to actually come up with a business plan of sort to start off with and this is what will take up the most time. A business plan needs to contain a lot of different information; you need to state what type of business you want to be and what you are going to sell. You then have to state your objectives and goals and what you hope to achieve.

But most important of all, you need to have money to fund your ideas and this is where many businesses fail. Did you know that 9/10 businesses fail within their first year of starting up? This is mainly due to not creating a proper business plan. When you combine such a business plan with the money you’re using to fund the business you may find that you waste a lot of money. So, utilize your time, get your business plan right and spend your money wisely. Setting up a successful business takes time and patience. If you have a good idea, you can go a long way.

Becoming an entrepreneur is a lot harder than you may think. One of the hardest decisions to make is deciding when to quit your day job. Once you have found something that works you can start building on it and developing your ideas. If you put in the time and effort in you can definitely become an entrepreneur.

How to Get Along with your Roommate

PDF Print E-mail
Dorm RoomWhen starting out at College you may find that meeting new people can be both hard and fun, but even if you do make friends with somebody you have to realize that if you are sharing a dorm with somebody you will have to be tolerant of them. This article will provide you with a few tips that should help you out when sharing a dorm with somebody else. It can be a pleasant experience but it is important for you to read these tips so that you are prepared if you ever do run into any of the scenarios that are discussed here.

When in your dorm you may find that sometimes there will be territorial collisions. For example there may be fights over using the shower or the toilet. This can extend as far as arguments over fridge space. If you get along with the person fairly well then you should talk to them and work out a plan. Arrange a time for when you both should use the bathroom for washing, of course when using the toilet it can be a problem. But if it does happen, find another solution. This can apply for all things. Explain to your roommate that you both have to be tolerant of each other and it is important so that you both don’t have any fallings out. Just talk to your roommate, they are likely to be a nice enough person, so they should respect your wishes.

One problem you may face is when your roommate has his/her own friends over. This can be a problem as you may feel intimidated or even an invasion of your privacy. One thing you can do is try to join in on the activity and have fun with them and if you still disagree about the whole situation afterwards, just talk to them after their friends have gone. If you are trying to study, listen to some music to block outside noise, and if that still does not work, go to the library or somewhere peaceful to regain your concentration. But if it is bothering you it is important that you speak out and let your roommate know of your problems. Hopefully by doing this you will be able to resolve any issues you may have.

If your roommate is continuously disrespectful towards you whilst you spend your time there, it is important that you take action. Many people believe that they can get away with anything in College since they are no longer around their parents. When you’re sharing rooms with somebody it is important that you both respect each others privacy, so if you ever encounter any major problems with your roommate, just speak to the people in charge of dorms or the RA and you should be able to move in with a different roommate. Don’t be afraid to ask, it happens to many people, and if the situation becomes uncomfortable it is important that you move on.

But overall you do need to get along with your roommate. It is important to talk to your roommate as much as possible, even become friends with them. This only makes it better as you are both on the same side of the coin and you should hopefully have less squabbles when sharing your room. Get to know your roommate, socialize with them and if you do have an argument, point out how silly it is and hopefully things will be resolved. Getting along with your roommate is easy, as long as you make it easy.

The Importance of Social Networks in College

PDF Print E-mail
MySpaceMost people know the name myspace or facebook when they here them. Those in college can hardly go a day without hearing one of them or more than a few hours without checking on them. For those not as familiar with the social networks of facebook or myspace, here is a short summary. Basically both of these programs allow people to create a profile outlining their interests such as what music they listen to, what movies they like and so on. Some people even post their birthdays or hometowns. In the case of facebook, each profile has a ‘wall’ on which friends can post short messages or sayings they want to share. If one has a more private message he wants to share, he can send a message directly to another user. Unlike the wall post, no one will have access to this but the person sending and receiving the message. Beyond these simple things, a plethora of new programs or ‘applications’ are springing up. These allow a user to do anything from sending an egg that will hatch over a few days to challenging people to a ‘duel’ in an online game.

Everyone familiar with these programs know that there is a great number of facebook and myspace ‘addicts’ that cannot seem to function without logging on at least once a day. People are beginning to question whether or not these sites are healthy for students. There exist concerns about the safety of those who use it. An identity may be stolen or a user could be followed or stalked which could lead to any number of unfortunate outcomes. However, if facebook and myspace is used in moderation and the user is careful about privacy, these problems are easily avoidable. The problem of stalking is only really an issue if the potential stalker can find where this person lives. So if the user does not include that information on his or her profile, then there is no concern. As long as the numerous applications do not distract from one’s social life in person, then these are not a problem either.

The positive outcomes of facebook

Because facebook is an online network, it is much easier to keep in touch with friends scattered all over the country or even the world. Acquaintances from high school can attain a profile and add their friends to their lists and share messages or wall posts. This is an excellent way to keep in touch without requiring a phone call, which can come at inconvenient times. The messages and wall posts create a perfect way to talk to old friends at both people’s convenience. In addition, it is a great way to meet people as well. Say two people run into each other at a party and all they get are each others names. If they have a facebook, they can be found again later and perhaps a new friendship can arise where one otherwise would not have. All one has to do to get a great, safe experience out of using facebook or myspace is to be careful what information is posted and keep it from taking too much time away from other things.

Buying a Home near campus is a good investment

PDF Print E-mail
Purchasing a home is considered the most important purchase that you will ever make. That being said, many parents have purchased homes near college campuses in order to give their children an edge when it comes to getting to classes on time, having them home for holidays, and many other reasons. The truth is that purchasing a home near a college campus is an excellent investment for a number of reasons.

The first and obvious reason, particularly if you are a College Student, is that you will be closer to the school which makes it more convenient. If individuals do not have children, however, buying a home near campus can still be quite beneficial. Consider if you were to purchase a home with four bedrooms. Now, you may only need two of those bedrooms. You can actually rent out the spare bedrooms to college students, and potentially earn enough to supplement your mortgage payment each month, or even pay it in its entirety. Earning money is one of the main benefits of everything that we do. We, as a society, are constantly searching for ways to supplement our incomes, and investing in a home near campus is a wonderful way to do that.

You should also consider purchasing simply for the investment opportunities. Even if you do not plan to live in the home, there is a good chance that you can rent it out for use as a dorm or a fraternity or sorority house. Of course, you will want to be very careful in screening your rental applicants, as we all know college students can be rather wild at times. Properly screened applicants, however, should pose a nice rental income for you in the long run.

Now, consider if you do purchase a house near campus, even when you or its inhabitants are grown and out of college, you could still easily sell the home at its highest market value, providing it is still in good shape. This is because the demand for property in that area will always be high. It’s not like the College is going anywhere, there will always be demand. You could possibly make more from the sale than you paid for it, making it a very sound investment choice.

No matter what your reasoning is in considering a home near campus, you should know that overall the investment opportunities are sound. Whether you live there and rent out rooms, or rent out the entire home, you are sure to see a return on your investment, and given the cost of college today, a return on your investment could potentially help you to meet the costs of college.

Using a Credit Card in College

PDF Print E-mail
Image

Credit cards are so readily available today that some may consider them a staple for everyday living. Practically everyone from teenagers to the elderly has a credit card of some type. A particularly targeted group is college students. Credit card companies are actively offering lines of credit to college students, with the selling point of having the ability to purchase supplies, text books, food, and even extra money for clothing, dates, and anything else that students may need to be comfortable while away from home.

Those are the good points of owning a credit card while in college. Knowing that you have the money for what you need in school, or for gas to travel home for holidays and such, is one major selling point that lures college students into the credit card trap. Of course, used wisely, credit cards are not a terrible thing to own. If you choose a card with a low interest rate, and one that does not penalize you for early pay-off, then you could possibly own a credit card and never worry about needing emergency cash.

This all being said, there are also bad points to owning a credit card while in college, particularly to the parents who are normally the ones who are hit with the bill each month. Many college students do not fully understand the workings of credit cards. Having money on hand is great, at that particular moment. When you are faced with paying the bill, however, it is not so great. Imagine receiving a credit card bill for all your purchases, and not having the income to pay the bill. Eventually, your credit card company will report you as being delinquent, which will in turn, show up on your credit history making it nearly impossibly to receive credit once you have finished college and are ready to begin your adult life.

On the other hand of the bad side of college credit cards are your parents. Many college students who own credit cards let their parents pay the bill. This is a bad point for parents, as they have their own expenses to worry with, much less being hit with a large credit card bill each month by their "grown up" college students who want to have money to spend on the simplest of items.

Overall, credit cards for college students will probably not make or break your college career. There are good and bad points to every argument. The key is to check the rates that are offered, choose the lowest possible rate, and ensure to yourself (and your parents) that you are responsible enough not to go on a spending spree and potentially run up a bill that will take your first five years of full time income to pay off.

Why go to College?

PDF Print E-mail
You hear about it all the time, the millionaires who succeeded despite not having a college education, or dropping out of school. It makes one wonder: Is going to College worth it?

For some, going to school can be an excuse for failing, thinking they can answer the question of "What are you doing now days?" with a "I'm going to School" answer. Which sounds better at the time than, "Just working at [insert shitty job here]".

It almost seems sometimes as if a College degree will just get you stuck in an office job for the rest of your life (and this is fine to some people). Granted in most cases you will earn more money with a College degree, but what other benefits are there? Whether it does or not, going to College is definitely worth the experience in itself.

And, why not go to College? A student loan is one of the easiest loans to get now days and is seen as a good investment and good debt.

The cost of an education has been skyrocketing over 6% per year for the past decade (other sources say 3% because the average inflation rate of 3%/year is factored in). Just check out our report of the most expensive Colleges for 2007-2008. As the cost of receiving a college education continues to rise every year you have to ask yourself whether a college education is necessary and what are the benefits of actually getting that degree.

Consider the question of attending College like an investment. Calculate your ROI (Return on Investment) of going to College. Unless you’re some daring entrepreneur with a great idea, or a star basketball player with a wicked jump shot, signs will almost always point you to getting a College degree.

The question then comes up…

What's more important, the degree or the knowledge, or the whole College experience?

Just look at all the universities making their lectures freely available to anyone with an internet connection. Now, no one has the time to view all the free courses online and it’s hard to say if people actually will when it’s not required of them. Even those students who are in those classes have a hard time attending, paying attention and staying motivated. What’s sad is I can view lectures from places like MIT (which is a known university to open source their course lectures) without paying a dime, unlike the students in those actual classes who are paying up the ying-yang to go to school there.

But, with all these free courses online, is it worth paying/going to College? When it comes down to it, all that really matters is that piece of paper showing you earned that degree, because any hermit can stay at home at watch MIT lectures, and while they may learn just as much from those lectures, they won’t hold the proper credentials to prove that. It’s not like a job candidate can list "watching YouTube Lectures" or YouTube U. on their job resume. On another note, it is hard to follow some of these online lectures, with the professor writing on the white board with his/her back to the camera.

I still believe just the College experience alone tops all other reasons for going to College. No, this is not the same as night class, distance learning, or online courses that are fit for those stay at home types or business types. A student can not have a true feeling of academia without being on a traditional College campus in the flesh, brick and Ivy. Actually going to the school and attending, unlike a distance course, a student will feel more a part of the school and have some sense of belonging to something with heritage and history. Living on campus also gives access to Sporting events and intramural sports, which psychologists say is a factor in feeling sense of community and involvement among students.

The whole College experience is vital to many students. Just ask all the married couples now who met their significant other while in College. Do you think that would have happened at an online or extended learning class?

What about all the parties. Living on campus is an experience in itself and allows you to be more social.

The one time it may be OK to skip out on the whole College experience is if you are already in a decent job and are going for your MBA and are taking night classes or online courses to advance your career.

Other reasons for not going to a 4-year university include costs. Some students now days are taking their first two years of classes and getting their prereqs out of the way at local community colleges. Here the student can still live at home, attend classes for cheap, and earn money with a part time job. With living at home and keeping expenses low, the student can easily save up money to pay for College, whatever financial aid and parents contributions can’t cover.
