On-Campus Jobs

PDF Print E-mail

A part-time job is almost a necessity for most college students. Dealing with expenses and books alone can have you scrambling for cash throughout the semester. If you are one of the many students facing financial problems in college and are in need of a job, consider on-campus jobs as your first option.

Working on campus means more flexibility with your work hours around class time since university employers are more likely to be flexible and understanding towards your individual needs. Also, transportation and travel expenses are not an issue when working on-campus.

Universities usually offer a large range of jobs for students such as intramural sports referees, library assistants, aerobics monitors, veterinary or medical assistants, and clerical and administrative positions all throughout campus. If you are into sports, you should look into taking the intramural ref class for a particular sport that interests you. Most of the time, that is the sole requirement needed to become an intramural referee. On the other hand, if you enjoy a more quiet and relaxed atmosphere, a library assistant might be just the thing for you. You will be rearranging returned books and working on the computer in the library doing simple tasks. In your spare time, you might be even allowed to study while still getting paid for work.

If you really want to get a heads up on the competition, consider getting jobs that are related to your major. For example, if you are a business major, you could try and find an administrative position on campus that will help put some money in your wallet while at the same time help you gain valuable experience towards your career path. On the same note, if you are a nursing or medical student, consider applying for a job at the school’s clinic. This will give you a head start on your career since you will usually be able to shadow nurses and doctors as they evaluate patients while at the same time performing simple yet vital roles for them.

Almost all of the jobs mentioned above are available at major college campuses throughout the United States and each call for a different taste and skill set. The great thing about all of them is that they will allow you to earn a decent income while getting the most flexible hours tailored around your class schedule. If you can find an on-campus job, consider it closely before looking for an off-campus job.
