The College Admissions Essay

PDF Print E-mail
The College Admissions Essay is important and should be taken seriously. It is important because it shows your writing and analytical writing skills and it could be your ticket into College. Be prepared though, as not all schools may ask for the same kind of essay and some may even require more than one.

The goal of you as a writer/admission applicant is to convince the reader (the admissions department) on why they should admit you to their school.

Quick Tips on writing an Admissions Essay:
  • Clearly show that you are motivated and have clear goals, both short term and long term.
  • Tell a story, share experiences.
  • Be concise: don't use 25 words when 6 will do.
  • Be personal and speak from the heart.
  • Backup your statements with examples, stories and any other method to strengthen your view.

The essay is your one chance of self promotion. Everything else: previous grades, recommendations, etc. are in the hands of others and/or can’t change be changed.

The admissions essay is even more important if your grades aren't top notch. The essay is a way to show admissions what skill you possess outside your grades and GPA. Sometimes a great admissions essay alone can get you accepted to a top school.

The whole experience is kind of like a job interview. The employer wants to know what skills you possess and what you can bring to the establishment.

Show and Write the things and ways you will contribute to the college as a student as well as why you want to attend their specific College.

Share and Tell of your dreams and aspirations, and maybe the school can help you achieve those goals.

Common Admissions Essay Questions

Common admission essay topics include career goals, academic strengths and weaknesses, life experiences, and reasons for applying to the school.
Example Essay Questions:
  • Recall an event or experience that left a mark on the type of person that you are.
  • Write about a great achievement in your life.
  • How do you picture yourself ten years from now?
  • How will the college contribute to the fulfillment of your goals?
  • Discuss a current issue and describe how it affects you.

Generally, liberal arts colleges place a greater importance on the essay than major universities, as they don't consider grades a main factor in admissions, but rather character, personality and what you will bring to the college community. Mastering the Admissions essay is key, and a crucial step in the College Admission Application process.
