Dorm Room Furniture Recommendations

PDF Print E-mail

Gone are the days of using milk crates and patched up beanbag chairs as dorm room furniture. Today, many furniture brands offer budget pieces made especially for a college dorm and are designed with a student’s budget in mind. A good rule of thumb to remember when purchasing dorm room furniture is to make sure that they are compact, multi-functional, and damage-resistant. Another important step is to make sure you know your own limitations when it comes to room space. It is crucial to visit the dorm and have a good understanding of what you will need to purchase and the size and specifications of each piece. Keep in mind that a lot of dorm rooms come equipped with a desk, a chair, and even a bed. The living area is also divided amongst all tenants so it is crucial to lie out a plan before you go purchase the furniture. Doing so will save you a lot of time and eliminate some of the hassle that comes with moving in and getting adjusted to the new situation.

There are a couple of things that should be prioritized when purchasing your new furniture. The first thing on the list would be to go out and get a nice computer desk. Most of the time, the desks provided by the Universities are not really ideal for computer use. Plus, if you could find a corner computer desk that you like, you would be killing two birds with one stone since the corner of a room is the hardest place to fill. This piece of furniture will allow you to have a spot were you could research information for your studies as well as enjoy your own time on the computer.

Gaming Chair

If you are into games and want to bring your current system into your dorm, then you might also want to consider investing in a gaming chair. These products are designed to provide optimum support while you game, watch DVDs, or TV all while giving you added comfort and conserving space, unlike some bean bag chairs.

Also, to avoid from getting your dorm room extremely messy with old leftovers and dirty clothes, consider investing in storage furniture. For example, an inexpensive coffee table with some storage drawers can provide a student with extra storage for books, clothes, and can even be used as place to store your laptop. Most importantly, this piece of furniture can double as a place to quickly grab a bite to eat.

If you do not like this type of furniture, but still want storage space, consider investing in modular storages. These can interconnect and can store quite a bit for a small amount of money. Anything is better than a milk crate.

Also consider purchasing your furniture at thrift stores if you are on a tight budget. These stores normally have a wide selection and will still allow for the student to express his or her individualistic self, while providing great value for slightly used furniture.
